Foundations, Week Two: The Idea and the Customer
The Foundations series continued Sunday, November 1, at 7:00 PM ET, with Episode 2, “The Idea and the Customer” — now available to listen to and to watch. Episode 1, “Starting From Zero,” defined a business as an organized answer to somebody else’s problem, offered in exchange for money, with the machinery to keep that exchange going. Episode 2 starts building one — and building starts not with the product, but with the problem, and with the specific person who has it.

The episode opens on an uncomfortable fact. In February 2018, Harvard Business Review summarized an extensive CB Insights review of 101 startup post-mortems: 42 percent of the failed companies suffered from a lack of demand for what they were offering — no market need. Running out of cash accounted for 29 percent, and being outcompeted for only 19 percent. The thing founders worry about most killed fewer than half as many companies as the thing they worry about least: that the customer simply does not care enough.
Harvard Business School professor Thomas Eisenmann reached a matching conclusion in his 2021 Harvard Business Review article “Why Startups Fail,” naming the false start as one of the most common patterns: founders rush to launch fully functional offerings that fit no market need, because they never researched customer needs first. His prescription sets the episode’s order — define the problem first, get one-on-one feedback from potential customers second, validate the concept with real customers third, and build last.
Takeaway: Most failed businesses run the sequence backwards — they build first, then go looking for a problem their finished product might solve. Before you spend serious money, name the problem, name the specific customer who has it, and test whether anyone will pay.
New episodes of Run the Room arrive every Sunday at 7:00 PM ET. Next in the Foundations arc: “Making It Real: Structure, Registration, and the Rules” on November 8, and “Money In, Money Out” on November 15.
